UP GWA calculator : If you’re at the University of the Philippines, your GWA isn’t just a number on your grade report — it’s what decides whether you graduate with honors, keep your scholarship, or qualify for a program transfer. Here’s exactly how it’s computed, and what the honors cutoffs actually are.

How UP Computes GWA

UP uses a 1.00–5.00 scale, where 1.00 is the highest grade and 5.00 is a failure — the opposite of the American GPA system. Your GWA is the weighted average of all your grades, weighted by each subject’s unit count.

GradeMeaning
1.00Highest passing grade
1.00–3.00Passing range
4.00Conditional failure
5.00Failure
INCIncomplete
DRPDropped

The formula:

GWA = Σ (Grade × Units) ÷ Σ Units

In plain terms: multiply each subject’s grade by its unit count, add all those up, then divide by your total units for the term.

Worked Example

Say you took five subjects in a semester:

SubjectGradeUnitsGrade × Units
Math 171.5034.50
Eng 101.7535.25
CS 211.2545.00
PE 21.0022.00
NSTP 11.5034.50
Total1521.25

GWA = 21.25 ÷ 15 = 1.4167, rounded to 1.42

That’s your semestral GWA. Your cumulative GWA works the same way — just include every subject you’ve taken across all semesters, not just one term.

Use the GWA Calculator to run this automatically instead of doing it by hand every semester — just plug in your grades and units.

UP Latin Honors Cutoffs

This is the part most students actually search for. The commonly cited UP cutoffs are:

HonorGWA Range
Summa Cum Laude1.00–1.20
Magna Cum Laude1.21–1.45
Cum Laude1.46–1.75

A few things that matter beyond the raw number:

  • Residency requirements — most UP units require you to have completed a minimum number of units in residence (i.e., actually enrolled and completing coursework at UP, not through cross-enrollment or credit transfer) to qualify for honors, regardless of GWA.
  • No failing or dropped grades — a single 4.00, 5.00, or unresolved INC on your record can disqualify you from honors even if your GWA is otherwise in range.
  • College-level variation — some colleges apply additional criteria on top of the university-wide cutoffs.

Confirm the exact cutoffs and residency rules with your college secretary or the University Registrar before assuming you qualify — honors policies get revised periodically, and enforcement can vary slightly by constituent university (UP Diliman vs. UP Los Baños vs. UP Manila, etc.).

Quick FAQ

What GWA do I need for Cum Laude at UP GWA calculator?
Generally 1.75 or better, with no failing grades and residency requirements met — but verify current policy with your college, since it isn’t identical across every UP unit.

Does UP round GWA up or down for honors purposes?
This varies by college and isn’t standardized university-wide — check with your registrar rather than assuming a rounding rule.

Do INC grades get counted in GWA?
An unresolved INC generally isn’t averaged into GWA until it’s converted to a final grade, but it can still affect your honors eligibility. Ask your college secretary how INC is currently treated for your specific case.

Is UP GWA the same scale as other Philippine universities?
Most Philippine universities use a similar 1.00–5.00 scale where lower is better, but exact honors cutoffs and computation rules differ by school — don’t assume UP’s numbers apply elsewhere.

Can one bad semester ruin my Latin honors chances?
It depends on how much it pulls your cumulative GWA and whether it includes a failing grade. A single low grade rarely disqualifies you outright unless it’s a 4.00/5.00 — but it does make hitting the cutoff harder. Talk to your college secretary if you’re on the edge.
